Meet the Staff

• Dr. Melanie Duong has been creating beautiful smiles for 25 years. Dr. Duong received her B.S. degree in Chemistry, magna cum laude, from University of Arkansas. She earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at University of Alabama where she ranked in the top ten of her class. Dr. Duong practiced general dentistry for eight years in the United States Air Force prior to specializing in orthodontics. Dr. Duong attended the top-ranked University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she earned her postgraduate degree in orthodontics.
• Our doctor's numerous university honors include the Dean's List, Phi Beta Kappa, Chemistry Scholar, Outstanding Undergraduate Honor Research, Omicron Kappa Upsilon First Prize, Best Basic Science Table Clinic, Oral Pathology Award, and American College of Dentistry Award. While stationed in Germany, Dr. Duong was recognized by the Assistant Surgeon General for rendering superb dental care to a high-ranking foreign dignitary. She was also featured in the Air Force Dental Corps recruiting posters and brochures. As a business owner, Dr. Duong has been listed in the American Directory of Who's Who in Executives and Business several times. She also earned an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. Recently, Dr. Duong's practice is the proud winner of the 2009 San Diego Award as the best in local business in the orthodontics category, 2010 America's Top Dentist, and 2011 Top Doc San Diego Award.
• A published author and public speaker, Dr. Duong maintains memberships in several professional organizations including the American Dental Association, American Association of Orthodontists, Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, California Dental Association, San Diego County Dental Society and the San Diego Orthodontists Study Club. In her personal time, she enjoys traveling, photography, flower arranging, dancing and painting.

Each member of our treatment team is a registered assistant, and our office staff has years of experience in treating patients with the highest level of care. We strive to stay abreast of the very latest in technology and advances by regularly attending continuing education courses and seminars on such topics as orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, implants, OSHA infection control, practice management and Invisalign. • My name is Leslie. Going from engineering field to dental profession is a drastic change in my career. I have been working at Sun Orthodontics as a Patient Care Manager for the past decade. Our facility is located in the heart of Rancho Bernardo with a wonderful doctor and staff. I feel fortunate to be a part of the team. It's very fascinating to see how orthodontics with the innovation of technology can transform people's lives physically and psychologically. It's magic! After each busy working day, I usually reserve some quiet time for myself either reading, listening to music or thinking. The sounds of the ocean, the running water in the river and the beautiful scenery inspires my deepest thoughts and transforms me into a poet. Working with flower arrangements or creating artwork are my favorite hobbies.
• My name is Hong and I have been in the orthodontic field for 11 years. I am responsible for all your scheduling needs and financial transactions. I live in National City and have been with Dr. Melanie Duong for the past 6 years, the distance is worth the drive to be here. It is heartwarming to see our patients go through positive life changing experiences because of braces. Every patient that walks in our office becomes another member of my family. When I am not in the office, I am attending school or enjoying being mischievous with my children.
• My name is Mica Coburn and I have been a part of the Sun Orthodontics team since 2006 as a student intern. I am responsible for assisting the team in whatever they may need in order to render the most dedicated patient care. Transitioning from patient to intern has given me an interesting look into orthodontic care and had inspired me to go into dentistry as well. Currently, I attend the University of California Irvine in the school of Biological Sciences. I plan to graduate with a Bachelor's Degree in Science and a minor in Film in hopes of continuing onto post-graduate school for dentistry. When not studying or working at the office, I enjoy making films, meeting new and interesting people, as well as getting involved at my school and in the community.
