Office Tour
My name is Dr. Randal Pham. I am an eye MD and a plastic surgeon. I have been practicing eye and plastic surgery in the South Bay (Silicon Valley) since 1994. I would like to begin by introducing myself and my practice. Because of the unique training that I had, over the years I have developed my practice into a rare combination of plastic surgery and eye care that includes services ranging from presbyopia correction, cataract surgery and lasik to aesthetic eye and facial plastic surgeries. After receiving my training in ophthalmology I went on to complete fellowship training in the field of plastic surgery related to the eye and face. This specialty, called ophthalmic plastic surgery, is now one of the only two plastic surgery specialties recognized by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education. The long and assiduous training has prepared me well to serve my patients. After more than 15 years in practice the experiences that I acquired from each and every one of my patients help make me a better surgeon; for that I am forever grateful to them. In addition to possessing the most current medical knowledge and the state-of-the-art surgical skills I strongly believe that helping patients become more informed of the new technologies and new treatments is one of the keys to providing quality health care. I invite you to explore my web page and learn of the different types of services that I provide. The uniqueness of my practice is the amount of care I and my staff put into each task to bring about the best possible results for you. Now I would like to introduce you to some of the procedures that I perform on a majority of my patients. First on the list is cataract surgery. A cataract is the lens inside the eye that becomes opaque due to precipitation of proteins. As the lens in the eye ages, proteins become solid making the lens harder and more yellowish. As a result, light cannot get through and vision becomes blurred. The only proven method to eliminate cataract is to remove it with surgery. Cataract surgery is one of the most common and safest procedures performed in the US today. Cataract surgery involves the removal of the lens with ultrasound and replacing it with a man-made lens. The new man-made lens has the ability to allow patients to focus far, intermediate and near. This ability helps patients read and drive without glasses after cataract surgery. Second on the list of procedures that I perform is presbyopia correction. Presbyopia is a condition in which the lens loses the ability to focus on near objects. This is a normal aging process that occurs in all of us. The onset of presbyopia typically occurs in people between the age of forty and fifty and continues to worsen as one ages. Because of this aging process people need to wear bifocals and sometimes trifocals. To correct for presbyopia there is currently only one surgical option: to replace the aging lens with a man-made multifocal lens. This procedure is called refractive lens exchange. Refractive lens exchange is very similar to cataract surgery. The only difference is that instead of removing the opaque lens, the surgeon removes a clear lens. Although cataract surgery is the most commonly performed procedure in the US, refractive lens exchange is currently not an FDA-approved procedure. It is therefore imperative that you obtain a consultation to learn whether or not you are a candidate for refractive lens exchange. The third most common procedure that I perform is lasik. Lasik involves the creation of a flap of the cornea using laser. The flap is then lifted and the laser is used to reshape the cornea. Lasik is used today to correct for nearsightedness, which is the ability to see at near but cannot see at distance, for farsightedness, which is the opposite (the eye can see far away but cannot see at near) and for astigmatism, which is the blurriness caused by the cornea not being spherical like a basketball; in astigmatism the cornea is slightly oval and shaped like a football. The result is blurred and distorted vision. Lasik vision correction can help eliminate nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. In addition to the above procedures, I also perform eye and facial plastic surgery. Please visit my web page to learn about these procedures. Thank you for your attention and welcome to my web page.
